The Surf Dojo is a small, locally owned and operated business located in the small seaside town of Mangawhai Heads.
Founder Tony Baker has lived in the area for over 25 years and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in all things relating to the ocean playground on his doorstep.
He has been surfing since 1985 has competed successfully locally, nationally and overseas and is a Qualified ISA Level 1 Surfing Coach . Tony is also a Senior Lifeguard for the Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service (MHVLS) Inc.
His previous coaching experience includes surf schools in the USA (San Diego Surfing Academy) Australia (South Coast Surf School) and New Zealand. He is a qualified Secondary School Teacher and currently teaches at Bream Bay College in Ruakaka.
Tony is very active on the Local and National Surfing scene. He is a founding member of the Mangawhai Boardriders Club, has been a Manager and Selector for both the Northland ( 2000 - present) and New Zealand Junior Surfing Teams (2012/2013 - ISA World Junior Surfing Games) and is an Executive Member of the recently formed Northland Surfing Association. He has also competed both Nationally and Internationally, winning numerous Longboard surfing events in New Zealand. He has travelled all over the world and surfed in places including USA, Central and South America, UK, Africa, Australia and the Pacific Islands.
Tony is a Team Rider for Surfline Surfboards shaped by Roger Hall in Ruakaka, and has been published (both as a writer and surfer) in numerous NZ and Australian Surfing Publications. He also plays music in The Aloha Corner and runs events such as the LOGGER HEADS Traditional Longboard Contest held in Mangawhai each year.
Tony is joined at The Surf Dojo by good friend and top local surfing identity Jess Costello. “Cossy” as she is affectionately known is a Senior Lifeguard at MHVLS and First Aid Instructor and most importantly a Mother to Layne and partner to Rick. Jess has been surfing for over 15 years and is well known for her ability to connect with people on every level. Jess has been instrumental in the success of The Surf Dojo as a Coach and Mentor to the many young surfers in Mangawhai. Jess has also travelled the world surfing to destinations like Australia, Indonesia, Europe and the UK and has won numerous local surfing events in Mangawhai.
Matt Jensen - Head Boy at Bream Bay College also helps out with the Groms over weekends.

2To develop skillsand surf awareness amongst the local surfing community, namely school aged kids. At the completion of the 2014/2015 summer season The Surf Dojo had over 40 students registered in their After School Programme, with a number of these students going on to represent Northland on the National Platform
